Over the past few weeks I have been posting on various websites about casting for my upcoming feature horror film, Relentless. The two roles we are casting for at the moment are that of Ashley and Caroline. Ashley is easily the lead role in the film, however Caroline, while a smaller role, definitely has an important part and some serious screen time.
The general response was everyone wanted to audition for Ashley, and some were also keen to read the part for Caroline too.
While my initial posts did receive a few responses, and a few shared by word of mouth, I still thought I'd like to audition more people for the roles available. So I directly messaged a few people, outlining the production and the roles. I got a few replies and over the past week, have been booking ladies in for auditions.
We hired out a small studio in ACTT, and booked in times with nine actresses. Armed with a video camera and a heap of printed scene pages, we embarked on the journey down to Sydney, braving peak hour traffic and searching high and low for that elusive parking spot.
Five minutes after arriving and setting up, I got a text message from one of the afternoon bookings. She was too sick to make it in. It was a shame actually, as she was one of the two we were seeing that fit my idea of Ashley to a tee. Not that the other seven didn't have a fair chance, as the very first audition proved. Almost a polar opposite of all our ideas on how Ashley may look, absolutely threw our ideas in our face and packed a wicked punch. Actually, it was more of a high flying round house kick! What a start!
But then, the roller coaster really got going. Between auditions, I'd have to run, yes, actually run, up and around the block to throw more coins in the meter where I'd parked the car, sometimes having to stop to buy a bottle of water or a coffee to get a handful of coin to drop into that money gobbling hunk of metal.
We also got three more cancellations. A shame really, though I imagine it to be tough with all the regular things in life that pop up. Illness and sudden work commitments, of which I can both understand. It was a shame as I said, as we have so many projects loaded up to follow Relentless, that we were also looking for actresses for these other upcoming roles. Even though they were reading for this film, some were sure to give strong performances and move to the top of the list for the next casting.
Actually, that's exactly what has happened. I can happily say that after auditioning the remaining ladies today, we have cast our two leading ladies! In fact, we've also found another that did so well, and will definitely get the call for the next film.
While I won't yet be releasing details about the successful actresses, you can be assured this won't be far away. We are hoping to do some still shoots with them next week, as well as some make up and wardrobe testing, before hitting into serious rehearsals the following week.
So stay tuned, things are really starting to heat up now!
Perhaps there'll be some snippets from the auditions popping up soon?
